Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014: Reflections & Goals

2013 has been a good year for us. We spent some wonderful time with family, we found a wonderful new community when we moved to the Kailash Ecovillage, we made some good progress towards our homestead goals, and of course we started Nature, Nurture, Grow.

Nathan and I don't really make the normal New Year's resolutions, but as we look forward to 2014 we wanted to make some goals so that we can celebrate some of our successes when we look back on the year. So here are some of the things we hope to accomplish in the next year.

Kristy's Goals

  • Narrow down and decide where we want to start our homestead.
  • Save enough money so that we can start looking for land by the end of the year!
  • Actually harvest nettles this year. (I always say that I am going to and I always miss them...). Take advantage of all the fruit that is available to forage this year (especially that beautiful mulberry tree).
  • Take time to enjoy our personal garden and the group garden work parties.
  • Take time to explore how food choices affect my health. Explore a grain and sugar free diet through an elimination diet this spring.
  • Continue exploring traditional food preparation, especially fermentation and soaking/sprouting.
  • Start using our grain mill (a Craigslist find!) to mill our own flour.
  • I ran my first 5K race(s) in 2013, so this year I want to run my first half-marathon!
  • Starting in 2015 we will end up spending many a weekend looking for land to buy and then building our homestead, so this year I really want to spend time exploring the beautiful state of Oregon before we leave. I want to make camping, backpacking, and hiking a priority this year.
  • Even though it already looks like it is going to be a busy year, I want to make sure to take time to continue volunteering on a regular basis. This year I would like to join Habitat for Humanity Women's Build Project about once a month.
  • Continue to blog regularly and to make connections with the blogging and homesteading communities. I hope that you will continue to join us!

Nathan's Goals

  • Prepare for and run a full marathon.
  • Build a bat box for the Kailash Ecovillage.
  • Use the above mentioned elimination diet as an opportunity to reestablish healthier eating habits.
  • Successfully audition as saxophonist for an elite band (more details to come as this develops).
  • Cultivate emotional and spiritual health and happiness.
  • Make longer lists than Kristy...

Happy New Year everyone!

  1. Fabulous list of goals. I wish you the best on all of your endeavors.
What a fascinating place to live! It might be fun to share that on my blog. I'd love for folks to know more about it. Think that would be okay with your neighbors?

Thanks for sharing on the Maple Hill Hop.

    1. Thanks Daisy! I am absolutely loving living Kailash! The Ecovillage often gets various forms of publicity and we love sharing. So I am sure that that as long as there isn't anything that could become a safety/security concern, they would be happy to get the word out into the world. I would be happy to help sharing any information etc.!

  2. Sounds like a great list of goals! Looking forward to hearing about your new homestead!
